The struggles of a teenage mother, making ends meet and raising a stubborn 3 year old on her own have made her grow up quickly. Not able to leave for long periods of time because of Maddie, Whitley is exhilarated to have a weekend alone in Lincoln. The bachelorette party for Kylie at a bar promises to be a great time, until Whitley sees Alex Wesson walk in. The haunting images from almost 4 years ago come crashing back, and Whitley runs for the bathroom, physically ill from the sight of him. Making excuses, Whitley leaves the bar and goes out front to hail a cab. A voice from the past, comes crashing into the present outside and ignites the anger she has been trying to suppress. Alex tries to apologize for that night, but reminds her of the orgasm she did experience. On some level, she must have enjoyed it. Whitley completely loses her cool at his asinine remarks. Screaming with rage, she reminds him that he raped her, while she was too drugged or drunk to do anything about it. Jumping in the cab, she leaves, vowing never to see Alex again.

A few weeks later, a white sports car pulls up and Alex Wesson gets out at her family’s campground. This cannot be happening to her! Panic shoots through her body as she tries unsuccessfully to try to hide Maddie from Alex. He eventually comes face to face with the adorable 3 year old and she can see the gears turning in his head as he does the math and realizes Maddie is his child. He demands to be part of his daughter’s life and will do anything to have that chance. Whitley is blackmailed. He threatens to take Maddie away from Whitley, saying he will be granted sole custody. She makes a deal with the devil, Alex, and moves to Lincoln so Alex and Maddie can form a relationship. They pretend to be the perfect little family in front of their parents and friends for months until it doesn’t feel like a sham any longer. Can this be real after such an ugly incident brought them together in the first place?

This book gets 5 stars! I could not stop reading it and stayed up until the early hours of the morning to finish it. This was such a well written rollercoaster, with twist and turns, ups and downs. At one point you actually love Alex, and how he is with Maddie and Whitley. The next, you absolutely loathe the snake he is and his manipulative ways. Whitley is portrayed as a tired, over stressed young mother, who had to grow up quickly. Her only escape is alcohol and she uses it to ease the pain and numb the outside world. Truly a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the fantastic conclusion was just perfect!

“I’m not your pawn. You can’t treat me like this,” I yelled drunk words, trying to make sense.
Alex walked back out wearing his jeans.
“I have never treated you like my pawn.”
“You think I’m young and stupid and I just have to do everything—”
My words were cut off by his lips on mine. He tossed me toward to the bed and jerked my shoes off, flinging them roughly across the room. I stared in shock as he unsnapped my jeans and pulled them crudely over my hips.
“Alex, stop. What are you doing?”
He didn’t listen. He ran his fingers between my legs, aggressively shoving two fingers inside of me, dragging them up my wet slit, to my clit, and back inside of me.
“You want me to stop, Whitley?”
“No,” I whimpered as he assaulted my throbbing clitoris.
