Excerpt
I’m both exhilarated and fearful as
I return cautiously back to the house. It remains the same as I left it only a
few hours ago, no illumination from any of the windows, everyone still tucked
up, safely in their beds for the night. I quickly remove the small silver key
from inside of my pocket, and insert it slowly into the keyhole. I turn it,
breath held, expecting someone to yank open the door from my grasp, but it
doesn’t happen. Pushing it open carefully, the previously oiled hinges--courtesy
of myself-- make no sound as I slip inside. My instincts are screaming at me to
run for my room before someone sees me, but I ignore them. Instead, I move
slowly and silently through the darkened lounge, careful not to bump into the
furniture as I make my way towards the guest bathroom. Once inside, I retrieve
the fresh clothing that I stored earlier, from behind the loose bath panel.
Removing my dirt-covered clothing, I place them in a
brown paper bag, and shove them behind the panel, making a mental note to
discard of them properly in the morning.
Grabbing an exfoliating brush and
some soap, I make swift work of removing every trace from
my nightly excursion. Glancing in the mirror, I see my hair is matted, and in
need of a wash. Wet hair would definitely trigger alarm bells, so I’ll have to
settle for picking the loose leaves and twigs out instead. Mostly satisfied
with my appearance, I quietly ease the door open, peering around it, and making
sure the coast is clear. Slipping through the gap, I leave the door ajar,
knowing that the aged catch clicks loudly once the door shuts. My room is just
across the landing, and my nerves settle down. I have succeeded, another night
undetected.
