Fate, do you believe there is a predetermined plan for everyone’s life? What if you take it a step further, why do bad things happen to innocent, good people? Is it just the wrong place at the wrong time or was it their fate, was it God’s plan, for that to happen
Bree is a young, college graduate who witnesses a horrifying event. Needing a clean break and a fresh start, Bree takes off from her home in Ohio for Maine. She finds a job waitressing and starts to settle into life in the quaint town. Archer is a town native, living here his whole life. He has no close family after a tragedy took his parents, uncle and his voice. An injury to his throat during the same event destroyed the 7 year olds vocal chords. Raised by an eccentric uncle until his death three years ago, the now 23 year old Archer lives his life like a hermit. Archer only comes to town for groceries and to go to the library, never associating with anyone.

A chance encounter has Archer and Bree crossing paths that forever change their lives. Bree befriends Archer, and  offers to teach him sign language, to help him communicate with people. She quickly learns that Archer isn’t a mute; he can hear and has taught himself sign language along with other trades. She also appreciates the fine looking man he is. The physical labor he does on his property, has his muscles taught and refined, truly a delicious sight to see. They spend time together first as friends, then as lovers, as Bree tries to help Archer become more social and comfortable with people. They have both lost loved ones in their lives. Opening your heart to the possibility of love and marriage, that the person you love, could leave you is almost too much to endure. How do you survive that trauma twice in your life and survive? Can you ever love someone completely if you don’t even know who you really are or anything about the outside world?

Fate can be cruel. If you look back on the lives of Archer and Bree, had they not experienced the bad and continued to live instead of spiraling into an abyss of depression, they would have never found each other. As horrible as their experience was to each of them, THAT single event catapulted them onto a new path. Maybe with God’s plan or even fate, when one door closes truly another opens bringing a new beginning with it.

I loved this book! Mia Sheridan is such a gifted author with her story telling, bringing each character to life. You can picture the characters in your mind, how they look, how they speak but she also shows us their souls. You can feel what they feel, the characters staying with you days and weeks later. That is what a talented author does and that is in every book that Mia Sheridan writes.
