This is the third book of the Slow Burn Series, Zack and Gracie's story.
Zack and Gracie had their lives planned out in high school. They were going to marry, he was going to play football for a while, and then start a family. On a visit back from college, Gracie is gone, she disappear into thin air.
She might have been gone physically, but Zack was never able to get over her, she has been a permanent stable in his heart for 12 long years.
While on a possible work assignment at a gallery, the long lost lovers are reunited, but with an imminent threat to the Devereaux Security Services, will Zack be able to show Gracie that she's still the one, would he be able to find out all the answers he's been seeking for years, and will Gracie be able to trust Zack again?
There's no doubt that Maya Banks is a superb storyteller, she pulls the reader into the story and captivates them until the very end. And Safe At Last is not the exception to that rule.
The characters as well as their story were compelling and well written, the story lack a bit of romance, connection between Zack and Gracie. I would've liked to see the rekindle of their relationship a bit more, get their inner thoughts while the re-establishment of the relationship was happening. I understand that they had a history, but there was also a long separation and getting things back on track is usually a process, for me the coming together happened too fast.
When it came to the suspense throughout the story and secrets revealed, this is definitely a well crafted tangled web.
This is a book about a hero trying to protect and show the woman he loves that despite a long separation, it's always been her, and about a woman confronting her past to finally start living again next to the man she loves.
Even though this it the third book in the series it can be easily be read as a standalone.
