Sweet Sixteen by Brenda Rothert
Book Blurb
They say roses are the most beautiful...
Gin Fielding is counting the days until she escapes the small-town life of Roper, Missouri for college at NYU. She prefers to blend in, though she's far from invisible. But when she protects a younger student from a bully, the spotlight turns on her in ways she never imagined.
I say that every rose has its thorn...
The Friday night lights shine bright on Chase Matthews. Roper's golden boy, Chase can do no wrong, enjoying the small-town celebrity being the star quarterback brings. When Gin defends his little sister against a bully, he decides to lend her his star power and change her senior year in ways she never imagined.
But maybe the thorns are part of their beauty.
When Gin declines Chase's invitation to be part of the elite Sweet Sixteen, the repercussions turn both their lives upside down. But amidst the chaos, Gin and Chase find solace in one another. Together, they confront the ugly truth-- that sometimes glory has a dark side.
***Warning--Sweet Sixteen is an upper YA book with mature themes and is intended for readers 18+.

REVIEW
Being a teenager is hard
as it is, being a high school student when pretty much everyone worships
athletes and ignores the rest is somewhat of a nightmare for some.
Sweet Sixteen is as honest as can be tale of the trials and tribulations that some kids go through while navigating high school as well as the repercussions of certain acts that some (kids and adults) see as the norm. This story is raw, there's no other way to put it, it touches certain topics that could be sensitive to some readers. That said, the author did an incredible job portraying things that happen to high school students any given day with a touch of tough love, understanding, reality and what taking responsibility for your acts is all about.
Gin, the heroine, is mature beyond her years, she's a girl who knows what she wants and that is just to finish her last year in peace so she can start her next chapter in life. What I loved the most about Gin is that she respected herself above anything else, she was not going to compromise her beliefs no matter what the majority had to say. In a way, you can say that through it all Gin was a leader, not a follower. Chase Matthews is pretty much oblivious of the chaos he's participating in, but soon enough life will teach him some hard lessons and he will have to decide if he, like Gin, wants to lead or follow.
The writing and the character development is absolutely superb. I dare say this is one of the best YA books you'll ever read. Ms. Rothert got in these characters heads and let them tell a story that, especially for parents with kids this age, NEEDED to be told. I'm not someone that is attracted to the young adult genre but I can honestly say that I was enthralled from beginning to end due to the fact that the author lead me to FEEL exactly what these characters were going through.
Highly recommended and without a doubt one of the best books I've read this year. Well done!
