The book brought an array of emotions in me, to the point that I couldn’t keep reading through
the tears.
Hope and Cam had a relationship in high school, they went
their separate ways in college and started living their lives without each
other. In a period of seven years life
happened for Hope and Cam, they moved, they changed jobs, they met other people
and started relationships, but the only thing that remained constant was the
love they had for each other. Throughout those seven years they saw each other,
they connected physically and they hurt
each other deeply, but their love remained. Now years after their high school
romance started, Cam takes a leap of faith with a Sick Day to win Hope back
once and for all. Would he succeed in his effort and finally make the
connection that they always had or will Hope ignore his efforts and go back to
her life?
The book moves from the present time to the past and back to
the present, it also gives us a more soulful understanding about Oliver and
Olivia’s story and the similarities with Cam and Hope’s. I recommend that
people read Non Fiction and Hope to clearly understand the story.
The beauty of Morgan Parker’s books is that this could be
your story, or your friend’s or your neighbor’s. He writes about life and the
journey that it takes us through. His books are real, raw, full of tenderness,
with a hint of sarcasm and a sense of humor. All those qualities are what set
him apart from other writers.
This book made me think about Cam and Hope’s love story and how far Cam went to finally
claim that part of him that was missing for so long, it also made me think
about my life, what’s missing and what I would do to fill that void. I’ll leave you with one of the quotes from
this book (other than the very end, but you have to read the book to find out
what that is) that affected me the most. It’s a very profound and so true…
“Nobody wants to arrive at their destination only to be
greeted by loneliness, do they?”
“Don’t make me go home tonight,” I begged.
When her eyes found mine again, she nodded. I didn’t know what it meant, though. Was she nodding because I had to go home, or did she want me to stick around?
“Talk to me,” I begged.
“I can’t,” she whispered. “If I talk, I’ll lose everything I came here for.”
When I opened my mouth and started to speak, she placed a finger over my lips to silence me.
Leaning forward, she brought her mouth to my ear, and in a broken whisper, she asked, “Take me back to the hotel. Love me. Remember me. And then tell me whether or not you exist for me.”
“I don’t need to make love to you to know that, Hope. All I need is to take a breath of you.”
“Then breathe me, all of me,” she begged. “In my hotel room.”
