Spotlight #review: Steadfast by Sarina Bowen

 Synopsis

She’s the only one who ever loved him—and the only one he can never have.

Jude lost everything one spring day when he crashed his car into an apple tree on the side of the road. A man is dead, and there's no way he can ever right that wrong. He’d steer clear of Colebury, Vermont forever if he could. But an ex-con in recovery for his drug addiction can’t find a job just anywhere.

For Sophie Haines, coming face to face with the man who broke her heart is gut-wrenching. Suddenly, he’s everywhere she turns. It’s hard not to stare at how much he’s changed. The bad boy who used to love her didn’t have big biceps and sun-kissed hair. And he’d never turn up volunteer in the church kitchen.

She knows it’s foolish to yearn for the man who returned all the heartsick letters she wrote him in prison. But the looks he sends her now speak volumes.

No one wants to see Sophie and Jude back together, least of all Sophie's police chief father. But it's a small town. And forbidden love is a law unto itself.

Review

As much as I liked Bittersweet, the first book of this series, I was completely taken aback by the rawness and the beauty that is Steadfast.
When we first met Jude in Bittersweet we knew a bit of his background, what we we never imagined was  the extent of the emotions he was holding back, the regret, the loss he suffered. Sarina wrote a character that in the eyes of most is a complete screwed up, a man who paid a high price for a crime he committed while under the influence of drugs. The absolute honesty in which the author approached his disease and his fight to stay clean is one of the things that impressed me the most about this story. It felt so real, so painful, I felt like I was there fighting with Jude every second of every day.
His desire for the drugs that destroyed his life was there, but he wanted to show himself and the world that he was a fighter, that he was going to make it through the hurdle without feeding his body with the poison that had brought so much torment into his life.
Enter Sophie, Jude's ex, who haven't spoken to him in a few years. There's a world of hurt between them, but the love they have for each other is pure, intense, everlasting.
Little by little we see Jude start to walk on the right path, and despite a set back, he's a fighter, he shows the world how strong he really is body and soul. And through it all Sophie is there, encouraging him to be a better man not only for himself but also for her and their future. Aside from having the Shipley family helping Jude, there are also other characters that add such depth to this story.
This is truly one of the most beautiful books I've read this year, from the storyline to the well crafted characters, Sarina Bowen takes the reader on a heartfelt journey of loss, real struggles to survive the horrible disease that is addiction, forgiveness, and hope.
A MUST read without a doubt!

Blurb
The first time I met Chase Parker, I didn’t exactly make a good impression.
I was hiding in the bathroom hallway of a restaurant, leaving a message for my best friend to save me from my awful date.
He overheard and told me I was a bitch, then proceeded to offer me some dating advice.
So I told him to mind his own damn business—his own tall, gorgeous, full-of-himself damn business—and went back to my miserable date.
When he walked by my table, he smirked, and I watched his arrogant, sexy ass walk back to his date.
I couldn’t help but sneak hidden glances at the condescending jerk on the other side of the room.  Of course, he caught me on more than one occasion, and winked.
When the gorgeous stranger and his equally hot date suddenly appeared at our table, I thought he was going to rat me out.
But instead, he pretended we knew each other and joined us—telling elaborate, embarrassing stories about our fake childhood.
My date suddenly went from boring to bizarrely exciting.
When it was over and we parted ways, I thought about him more than I would ever admit, even though I knew I’d never see him again.
I mean, what were the chances I’d run into him again in a city with eight million people?
Then again…
What were the chances a month later he’d wind up being my new sexy boss?

Review

You can never go wrong with a book written by Vi Keeland. This author knows how to work a sense of humor into her stories mixed with a deep meaning behind the character's lives.
Chase and Reese meet under very peculiar circumstances, he ends up saving her from a disastrous date and they go their separate ways. But as luck will have it that's not the end for these two, their paths keep crossing in the funniest of ways and thanks to Bossman, Reese gets the job of her dreams at his company.
Chase wants Reese, desires her in the deepest of ways, the problem is she's not an easy target and will not risk her job for just a sexy rump between the sheets with her boss, no matter how attracted he is.
While the banter from the very beginning, as well as the chemistry between Chase and Reese is off the charts hot, their story has a deeper meaning behind the sensual foreplay. These are two characters that lived through life changing experiences, that come with some baggage, and that are trying their best to put their pasts behind and live life the way it was intended. While I felt bad for Reese and what she went through, it was Chase's back story that got a hold of my heart and squeezed tight. I can't even imagine to go through something like what he went through.
While Chase is a delicious piece of salted caramel cheesecake on the outside, on the inside he's a fresh warmed croissant. A seductive devil with a heart of gold.
While I loved and devoured every single word of this book, I would've liked to see a bit more feeling towards the end, a bit more of emotion from both characters, but specially from Chase since he was the one coming from a bigger shock.
All and all this is another solid hit for Ms. Keeland, well written, and one that contains the winning characteristics I'm accostumed to when it comes to her stories, humor, sensuality, unpredictability, and overall captivating.
Thank you for the chance to read and review this beauty Vi, until next time!

 Synopsis

I hate his cocky, overconfident smirk and the way every woman in the office drools over him. I hate the irresistible way he fills out his suit and his manwhore ways. I hate his tempting touch and the way he makes me want to break all the rules. His Clark Kent Glasses, his cheesy sense of humor, his animalistic desire to have me—on my desk, against the filing cabinet, spread out across the conference table.

I hate that he's my number one competition and if we're caught, I lose it all. And most of all, I hate that he's off-limits and I just can't stay away.

BLURB

Quinn
I’d say I’m down on my luck, but that’s an understatement. I’m flat on my ass. Homeless, hungry and in hiding with my little sister at the age of twenty-one, I’ve never been so desperate. I’ve hit rock bottom when I get an offer I can’t refuse. Sell my body to save my sister? There’s nothing I won’t do to keep her safe. I make the rules and I’m not afraid to defend myself if this rich guy crosses the line. But once I see beneath his cold, calculating façade, the lines aren’t so clear anymore.
Andrew
She’s an intoxicating mix of tough and vulnerable I’ve never known before. This homeless woman who fits right into my upper-class world is running from someone powerful, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her. But Quinn isn’t meant to be controlled, so I’m forced to choose between owning her and loving her. I’ve finally met my match, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make her truly mine.

Review

This has to be one of my favorite books by Brenda Rothert.

This story captures the reader's attention and won't let go until the final word has been read. Not only is the storyline superb, but the two very strong, compelling characters and the journey that unites their lives pull at your heartstrings and won't let go.

Andrew is a self made millionaire who doesn't have time for relationships and who appears to not even want them. Even though he appears strong he's still keeps the death of his father and the pain that loss left behind close to his heart. The moment he meets Quinn he knows he met his match, she won't obey his rules like all the other women he's been with, she's fierce, something that attracts him about her immediately.

Quinn has to be one of my favorite female characters ever. Her strength, her devotion to her little sister, her selflessness, and her take no prisoners attitude, make her a force to be reckoned with. She has big secrets that she must protect in order to save her sister, in order to save herself, and she's willing to do whatever it takes to keep them buried.

Andrew and Quinn's relationship is a slow, sensual dance, the author gives us a chance to get to know these characters as individuals before they become a couple. Little by little her story starts to reveal itself and I love Andrew's protectiveness, his compassion, and the fact that even when he doesn't know the whole story behind Quinn he doesn't judge her for the decisions she made, on the contrary, it causes great admiration towards her.

Quinn's bravery opened my eyes to some things that us as humans tend to see every day and sometimes ignore. Sometimes we forget that every person out there has a story we know anything about, that we all have a hunger inside of us that keep us fighting for what we think is fair, that the clothes we wear do not represent the type of person we are, that the sacrifices we often make are not always a waste of our lives.  This was simply a heartfelt story, told beautifully through the eyes of two imperfectly, but perfect for each other, characters that would leave you wanting more.
