Spotlight #review: The Right Pitch by Lyssa Layne

Published: December 2014

Synopsis
“Life will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off ... the right pitch will come, but when it does, be prepared to run the bases.”
-Rick Maksian

Colie Adger is trying to make it in the big leagues as an athletic trainer. Working in a man's world isn't easy but Colie has the help of Grant Adamson, a veteran pitcher on her team that has her back through the good, the bad, and the oh-so-ugly times.

Colie's elated when big time pitcher Jace Richards, her former crush, comes back into her life. This time, he wants it all, with Colie front and center.

Grant thinks Jace is too good to be true and doesn’t trust his rival with the heart of his trainer. Voicing his opinion, Grant steps to the side and lets Colie follow her own path. Colie is torn between Jace's lavish attention and the common sense of a solid friend.

Throughout the season, Colie must figure out how to make the best decisions for all the men in her life—both on and off the field. As good as she is at making decisions for others, can Colie figure out her own heart and hit a homerun off the right pitch?

Review
Colie Adger is an athletic trainer for an MLB team. She loves her job and the guys from the team but likes to keep the distance from them being all business when it comes to deal with the them.

Grant Adamson is a veteran pitcher with the team and a few years older than Colie. She's helping him with his pitching arm and from the very beginning you can sense that Grant has a thing for Colie but he respects her and keeps her at arms length.

The problem with Colie is that she's still has a thing for her high school/college crush who is also a professional ball player for a rival team. When starts align and Colie reconnects with ex-flame Jace, they start reliving the past. Even though Jace acts like a complete douche and Colie realizes that Grant has a thing for her, she insists in working things out with Jace.
Will the memories from the past be enough to make a relationship work?

Colie, Colie, Colie, there were moments during this book I wanted to smack some serious sense into you, make you understand that good for nothing Jace was just a player who was out for blood, but I couldn't do that being that you're a fictional character and all.
Grant, this man was a gentleman through and through, sacrificing his feelings and his own happiness to let Colie explore her possibilities with her ex. I loved him from the very beginning and he's one of those characters that will stay with a reader for a long time. Even though you feel that one of the characters was bad news I wasn't expecting the curve ball towards the end.
What kind of turned me off was the quick Colie changed her mind and what happened after, I thought it was just too fast and I didn't buy it.
The story was interesting and kept the reader captivated from the very beginning. Great book for fans of baseball and sports in general.
